Valletta, Malta

We awoke this morning to the most amazing views over Grand Harbour. We have a really special room with a sitting room which wraps itself around  the corner of this excellently placed hotel in Valletta, the capital of Malta. The photo shows just one angle of the view.

Our room is the typically Maltese one on the second floor with the jutting out section going around the corner of the building. We have a sun lounge room / night viewing room with two tables and four chairs.

We discovered this morning that yesterday we had missed a local festival celebrating St. Dominic. The streets were decorated with banners and many large statues very cleverly made to look like marble.

The streets in Valletta are very steep and many are only for pedestrians, they are stepped all the way. Others have stepped footpaths but cars can drive on the roadways. The whole of Valletta has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Area.

We did a  self guided tour of St. John's Co Cathedral, the only way you could get in. We were provided with handsets that gave an excellent commentary of all sections of the church, the oratory and the museum.
It was well worth the money and we spent two hours in there. The history of the Knights of Malta is played out in the baroque interior which contrasts greatly with the very plain exterior.

We walked right around the peninsula visiting fort St. Elmo, Lower and Upper Barracca Gardens and anything else that caught our fancy. We attended the Saluting Battery at 4 pm where the cannon is fired twice a day recreating something of the past glory of the location. We then did a very informative guided tour where we learnt all about cannon balls and associated equipment.

No rocking needed tonight!
