Ancient history and modern life

San Pietro Basilica in the Vatican and Roman ruins were on today's agenda. We have visited San Pietro ten times so there is nothing much new to see. Still the most spectacular moment is seeing Michelangelo's ' Pieta.' You just cannot comprehend that someone was that talented at 24 years of age. He also designed the uniforms worn by the Swiss Guards.

I am totally amazed at the quantity of ancient ruins interspersed with 'modern' buildings in Rome. This busy, modern city goes about business as any other city. The ruins on the other hand stand tall but are being affected by pollution and people. More than ever we are finding areas restricted. This is good of course, even if at the time you feel frustrated.

On a lighter note, our corner bar is a lifesaver on the way home after a day of walking up to 10 kms. A cool beer never tasted so good.

For seeing and being seen, and for an Aperol Spritz or a Bellini then de Marzio is the place. I was amused to see take away cocktails advertised.
