The Catacombs of San Sebastiano

Today we went out to the catacombs at San Sebastiano. The catacombs were burial places outside the city walls and date back to the first century A.D. There are six different areas open to visitors but alas no photos at any so I cannot show you the various types of structures found underground.

To get there you travel out the via Appia Antica, the ancient Appian Way. It is quite exciting to think that this was a prominent road in Roman times and is still a major route. Walking along there were some scary moments because the road is not wide.

We did a guided tour of the San Sebastiano catacombs, having previously visited another.

The most beautiful thing I saw today was a marble bust entitled 'Salvator Mundi'. It was created by renowned artist and architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1679 when he was 82 years old.
