Sunday in Naples

Sunday is very much a family day in Italy. That means that restaurants are very busy, cake shops are filled with little cakes and biscuits which are beautifully packed in boxes and tied with bows (to take as gifts when visiting family or friends) and parks and other public open spaces are crowded with families enjoying their family day.

Today the temperature is predicted to reach 35 degrees celsius (95 f.) so we have decided to catch up on chores, enjoy the air conditioning, relax the body,  and go out in the late afternoon.

By pure coincidence yesterday Kel turned on the television in the final minutes of stage 14 in Le Tour de France. Thrilled to see an Australian victory, and great not to have to stay up until 2 am to see it.

This might look like watching Le Tour but we are in fact working on our language skills!

At 6 o'clock we went out, got the Metro and headed back to where we were last night. This time we looked at Galleria Umberto, a great design but just a shopping centre then we took one of the four funiculars in Naples.

The funicular ride was quite short and there was no view on the way up so instead of taking a different one down we decided it was aperitivo time and went back to the place where we ate a few nights ago. The waitress welcomed us back, then later told me they now had what I wanted last time. What I good memory ... I couldn't even remember what that was!

Another return home on the Metro after dark and now we are listening to the many and varied noises associated with this lively city. Fireworks go off every night about 11 pm. I think it is part of wedding celebrations.

There are very few tourists from places other that the EU. We are the only Australians we have seen and still the oldest non Italians. It is quite fun trying to decide if we still hold this dubious record.
