Today was designated a rest day. My calf muscles had negotiated a few too many steps and needed to recover, my journal was two days behind and so was my blog. That is the beauty of renting an apartment, you can do as you please, in comfort.
After breakfast brought upstairs from the pasticceria and eaten on the terrace, we got on with catching up on our record keeping. We have been writing journals since 1996 and we are not about to stop doing that now.
A lemon granita kept the energy up mid morning.
Lunch was also sourced from the pasticceria, I really do like the dough portion of their offerings. Nothing like our bread, so much better texture and taste. The filling was ricotta cheese, no sugar.
At 4 pm we decided we needed to get out so, having discovered that via Tribunali runs parallel to the Spaccanapoli and leads to the Duomo, we wound our way there. Tribunali was more of a locals shopping street with mini markets, mini hardware stores and fruit stalls. Along the way we saw cobbles being re-laid, the famous Sorbillo pizza place and another with long queues waiting for a table.
The Duomo is quite unusual inside as it has a light grey colour theme. San Gennaro is the patron saint of Naples and his remains are in the crypt beneath the altar. He is said to have saved Naples when Mount Vesuvius erupted.
We walked some more and earned a gelato, then later an Aperol Spritz and then returned home.
About 9 pm we had a pizza margherita. Naples was the birth place of the pizza in its modern form and the margherita named after the Queen is made with tomato, cheese and basil to represent the Italian flag. There are very specific rules that must be followed to make an authentic Neapolitan pizza.
So now the blog is up to date, one week has gone already and tomorrow we go forth again.
