Market day, porchetta rolls, gelato

Saturday is market day in Impruneta so it is a busy morning in town. As Impruneta has a very good collection of shops the market is perhaps not so important, however in smaller villages with minimal shops the market is very important.

In those smaller places they buy everything, from dresses and underwear, shoes, hardware items to plants, fruit & vegetables to cheese and salamis. Our favourite stalls are the porchetta man (a whole pig, seasoned and roasted then the meat is served sliced to take home or as the very popular inclusion in a roll. We also like the summer fruits and the gadget stalls. We bought an ice cube tray.

After doing the rounds of the stalls we sat in the shade of the church, along side the locals, and I eavesdropped on their conversations. This is the best way to learn to understand what people are saying at a regular speed. No pressure to reply :)

A plaque on the wall of the civic building in the piazza. It says 1943 -1945  In memory of the internees of Impruneta in the Nazi concentration camps. There is also a plaque remembering 76 innocent locals who were killed in the Allied bombings on 27 July 1944. Very sobering when you see these things in a country town the size of your own.

Lemon & basil and Sicilian orange and dark chocolate gelati for me today. Kel chose Puofo (a vivid blue) and melon.
