Volterra A.D. 1398 Festa

Imagine Volterra in the year 1398, a Medieval town full of tradesmen, artisans, musicians, jugglers, populace and nobles. The town centre around the cathedral and town hall was the place of music, craft stalls, demonstrations of old skills, food and fun for the children. The park near the castle transformed into a village with farmers, shepherds, the military camp, falconry and all things country life, from blacksmith to cross bows, ale house to flour mill, sculptors to the hangman.

Entry was paid in euros and a wristband given, from then on all purchases of food or goods was in Grosso Volterrano, a medieval currency.

Another occasion when I can't begin to choose which photos to post, there are just too many. I hope you can get the feeling of living in the Middle Ages.

Lunch in the shade of the Cathedral

The mojitos weren't medieval, they were late afternoon refreshers.

Later in the evening we went back to the centre area around the cathedral but the crowds were massive so we had a quick look and headed back to the safety of our apartment.
