Today we went to Siena, about 100 kms from Panicale but achieved reasonably easily on the Autostradas. One is unlimited and the other 110 kph, but you do need nerves of steel!
Siena is a city in terracotta except for the Duomo which is a spectacular greyish-green and white stripe. The most notable feature inside is the flooring where large areas of the floor are covered in intarsia and graffito marble works. These are so special that they are usually covered but for a short period they have been revealed. We were very lucky to see this artistic treasure. The frescoes by Pinturicchio in the Piccolomino Library are also very spectacular.
We visited the birth place of Santa Caterina and also the church of San Domenico where they have the head of Santa Caterina on display. No photos allowed.
We enjoyed a birthday lunch of bruschetta, crostini, pecorino and pear salad and a caprese salad. All fresh and tasty local produce.
We returned to the Campo to look at it in the sunshine as earlier in the day we had had a fog. It is a most dramatic place for a horse race.
Returning home we snatched a quick 'pausa' before opening a bottle of Moët champagne and relaxing in our garden. Then we walked the 50 metres to the piazza and had a delicious dinner at Il Gallo nel Pozzo. Just a couple of examples from the table photographed. I was so busy enjoying the food I forgot to take more photos, but you have previously seen the magnificent pasta with truffles!
