Pienza and the Fiera del Cacio

The Fiera del Cacio festa was on today in Pienza, Tuscany. Pienza is noted for its pecorino cheese which is made from sheep's milk. This is why a cheese rolling competition between the six sections of the city is part of their festival.

There were many shops and stalls offering tastings and sales of pecorino.

Prizes were awarded for the best cheeses in various sections.

A parade of drums, banners and flag bearers paraded to Piazza Pio where we saw another spectacular demonstration of flag waving and tossing. The amazing thing is that these shows of skill have all been different.

The cheese rolling competition involved rolling a pecorino, the aim being to get close to the spindle and score maximum points. This is obviously more difficult than you might think.

On the way home we stopped at the very highly rated Bar Alise in CdLago for gelati, and so it was that we were enjoying delicious flavours at 7.10 pm.
