Dinner at Il Gallo nel Pozzo in Panicale

Prior to going on our walk we had decided we would eat out at Il Gallo nel Pozzo, by the time we returned home from the walk were were sure we deserted a lovely meal.

As we drove up to Panicale the sun was almost setting, I was lucky to get a couple of photos while the colour was still on the clouds.

I know they say alcohol causes dehydration rather than helping it but a big Aperol Spritz went a long way towards making us feel slaked.

First off Kel had his favourite pate and I had my favourite pasta with black truffles.

For our main course Kel chose boned leg of goose and I, the pork medallions with sage and bacon wrapped around them. They were both served with roast potatoes.

We didn't manage dolce which was a great shame but there is always next time. We very much enjoyed our meals in the relaxed outdoor atmosphere at Simone and Lorena's osteria.

After 9.30 pm the piazza started coming alive as the locals came out for a walk and a chat, a coffee, gelato or a cigarette. The new gelateria was doing a booming business. A term Aldo uses for the piazza translates to ' the village lounge room ' and that is a very accurate description.  The most entertaining things in the piazza are the children who are able to meet their friends and run free in the safe environment. The tabac cum newsagent shop stays open late and it does a good trade in toys. Last night the most popular were large balloons, followed by toy cars, crackers that you throw down on the ground to explode and bubble makers. A child little more than a toddler amazed all with his advanced soccer skills, he even had the celebratory arm actions when he decided he had kicked a goal.

With the fountain bubbling away we were beginning to nod off so it was time to go home and leave the locals to continue enjoying their Saturday evening.
