Buona Domenica

The Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo is a towering ediface at the top end of Piazza Umberto 1 in Panicale. I have written about this church and its art & artifacts in previous blogs, in previous years. It is built on 10th and 11th century foundations, had major restructuring in 1546 and again at the end of the 17th century.

This year as we entered the piazza through Porta Perugina we faced a huge covering of scaffolding. We were informed that there are major problems with the roof and work has begun on repairing it. The cost will be enormous but it is good that the work is being done to save this beautiful and unusual church.

This internal scaffolding has been in place for at least three years but thankfully it is the only interior structural support.

It was a bit hazy today but still the village and the views across towards Lago Trasimeno were beautiful.

Late this afternoon we drove up to the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Mongiovino near Tavernelle. We had been there before but today's visit was interesting because of meeting a man who was setting up for the evening Mass and was keen to talk. (See other post for details).   These photos show the front and back of the building, with our car dwarfed at the bottom corner of the rear photo.

This evening we stuck with our tradition of pizza on Sunday night and went to Il Pellicano, a big pizzeria with lots of outdoor eating located quite close to us. It is a very popular family place and the pizzas are perfect, large and extremely thin based. Kel had to have a photo of his capricciosa!

Buona Domenica (Have a good Sunday) is often heard on a Saturday afternoon and on a Sunday. Instead of Arrivederci (Good bye) they will say Buona Domenica. We had a Buona Domenica today!
