Day 2 and we were up early to make the most of our 24 hour Big Bus ticket. We rode around to the stop nearest the Botanical Gardens and walked to the main entrance. Darwin's climate is described as tropical savanna, that is two seasons, wet and dry. The dry season has very little rain and moderate temperatures. As a result the botanical gardens are quite different to most we have seen, but still fascinating and time consuming.
The cycad garden is amazing as cycads are ancient living fossils, and there are many varieties in the gardens. The area is enhanced, especially for children, by large dinosaur models.
Another amazing section was the Africa - Madagascar Garden featuring the desert plains of Africa with a great collection of Boab trees and other desert plants.
We had quite a long walk home and the day was getting hot. We called into the Catholic Cathedral which has a tropical architecture allowing cool breezes to blow through the whole church.
Back at the Leea Resort we had lunch by the pool and then had some rest time.
The Darwin Waterfront is probably the most popular eating area with locals and tourists. We walked over the Sky Bridge which gave us a big view of Darwin Harbour. With lots of restaurants to choose from, we finally settled on Hot Tamale, described as a colourful Mexican hotspot.
We were lucky to get a high stool 'perch' with a view out onto the water, the trees lit with fairy lights and children playing hide and seek. The temperature was perfect for families strolling along the waterfront.
A jug of pink sangria with strawberries and bowls of nachos with the usual things plus red pickled onions, jalapenos, black beans and a cheesy cream. Yum!And that was the end of day 2. Another enjoyable, fascinating and tasty day in Darwin.
