Perugia

Perugia is the capital city of the region of Umbria and has a population in the vicinity of 180,000. It is a university town, the first university started there in 1308. It is also known as a cultural and artistic centre. It has wonderful old architecture dating back to the Etruscan times.

Even though we have been to Perugia twice before, the problem of finding our way to the car park near the escalator up to the old city, and finding our way out of the city and on the the correct road home was still a major issue for us.

Three subjects feature in this post - architecture, art and food.

We did a couple of self guided walking tours and these led us to many churches. The result was we saw some extraordinary art today. My favourite was the Basilica of Saint Peter with a spectacular sacristy and work by some of the greatest artists of the time.

Pasticceria Sandro has been selling cakes in Perugia since 1860. I didn't try all these but I did eat the delicious chocolate tart.

You cannot visit Perugia without buying some of their famous Baci chocolates!
