A quiet day in Lecce

After a good night's sleep we spent the morning catching up on everything from washing to e-mail. For lunch we used the frise kit and enjoyed the taste of this local food. The whole meal bread shapes are very hard and need longer in the water than I gave them. Tomorrow will be better.

The daily thunder storm arrived about 1 pm, we rescued our washing and I then had a lengthy pausa.

When the rain cleared we went off to check out the historic centre, it is only a couple of minutes away. Like the bars, the gelaterie and pasticcerie are really smart places - lots of chrome, mirrors, gold lettering and class. I am not counting gelato flavours this trip but I have had several new flavours - pasticciotto is one. Based on a local sweet speciality which is a delicious crunchy but short pastry little pie filled with custard. We were given samples of the cake to try and I chose it as one of my gelato flavours. Both very delicious.

We just wandered aroung getting a feel for the place and taking a few photos. The architecture is quite different to central and northern Italy. Baroque design is everywhere and is said to heighten feelings of motion  and sensuality. It certainly catches your attention.

Here are a few photos that include King Charles V castle, an ancient olive tree still shooting, several churches including the Duomo, the anfiteatro and street scenes. Restoration is in full swing so lots of scaffolding. This pleases me, the restoration not the scaffolding.

This evening we enjoyed the fruits of our deli shopping for dinner, sitting on our terrace. Several types of cured meats, soft cheese, beautifully ripe and tasty tomatoes and scaldatelli. They are similar to taralli but larger and a different shape. They are very appealing and go well with a casual meal and/or a glass of wine.
