Rome to San Quirico d'Orcia, Tuscany

We started the day with a typical Italian breakfast before taking the train to Chiusi, which is half way between Rome and Florence. We usually collect a rental car there but this year we are travelling car free.

We had a short stop at Chiusi before getting a bus to Montepulciano. It was a wild ride going around all those hills in a commuter bus but I did manage to get a couple of photos. It is so green, I guess because we are not usually here this early in the year ... or maybe it is a vast contrast to much of Morocco.

Approaching the hilltop town of Montepulciano.

Another short change-over to a bus to San Quirico d'Orcia. There weren't many on this bus so Aldo was able to ride in comfort.

The route took us through Pienza, the home of Pecorino cheese, and in less than half an hour we were in San Quirico.
We are spending a week here in an apartment above a Michelin starred restaurant, the building has a long history as a place of hospitality.

Our apartment is one of three (with shutters open) and here are a few photos.

It has been meticulously restored, saving the quirky old features and blending them well with the sleek modern.

Views from our windows, the bedroom has countryside views and the living area has street views including the fountain, after which the place takes its name, Casa della Fonte.

A trip to the Coop supermarket, a passeggiata (slow walk) up the main street which runs the full length of San Quirico, from our place to Porta 1000 Miglia, then it was aperitivo time.

It is still too early (and cold) in the season so there are not a lot of tourists around, and many of those are pilgrims walking the Via Francigena.

It is also too cold for me to be drinking spritzes but the opportunities are few this year so I had to go for it. My latest favourite is a Hugo (pronounced Ugo) Spritz

Ah, la bella vita!
